Medicare Benefits Coverage (Part C) regulates and authorizes Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare Advantage plans are private health plans that contract with the government to provide and administer Medicare benefits. Medicare Advantage plans must cover Part A (except for hospice, Original Medicare pays for them) and Part B benefits. Medicare Advantage plans may also cover items and services not covered by Original Medicare.
Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug programs (MA-PD), private companies offer health plans that cover all Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, and also cover Part D prescription drug benefits (called MA-PD plans), as well.
Stand Alone Medicare prescription Drug Plans (Part D) help pay for medications prescribed by a licensed provider or other health care professional. Part D covers prescription drug benefits (for self-administered drugs, such as those picked up at a pharmacy and taken at home) and regulates Medicare prescription drug plans.
Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance) insurance plans help pay some of the out‐of‐pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare. Medigap works only with Original Medicare and is sold by private insurance companies to fill “gaps” in Original Medicare coverage, such as all or part of the deductibles or coinsurance amounts. Plans are offered by private insurance companies but are standardized by the federal government.
